Swedish golf pro talks about stuttering

golfer

Sophie Gustafson is a champion pro golfer from Sweden whose accomplishments include 26 victories worldwide, 5 in LPGA events. She is also a life-long stutterer. After more than twenty years on the circuit, she is bringing herself to face T.V. cameras and give interviews, something she has avoided for a long time. In this New York Times article, she speaks about how shying away from the cameras, and dreading the obligatory victory speech that comes with winning a tournament, has held her career back in some ways.

One thing Sophie credits with helping her come out of her shell is social media, and has found that expressing herself through her blog, Twitter and Facebook pages has helped "unlock her voice."

This year Gustafson was one of the recipients of the Ben Hogan Award, given to golfers dealing with a physical handicap or severe illness.
