the 36th Annual National Stuttering Association (USA) Conference

NSA conference logo Early in July, I attended the 4 day 36th annual National Stuttering Association (NSA) Conference which was held at the beautiful Marriott Harbor Beach Resort and Spa in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. There were over 800 people there and about 100 newcomers. As announced at a general session, we were participating in the largest gathering of people who stutter (PWS) in the world and it was EXCITING and DYNAMIC and MOVING, to say the least!

I’m still on a high from attending the Canadian premiere of the award winning When I Stutter documentary film co-hosted by the Association des bègues du Canada (ABC) and Tangled Tongues, an association for university students who stutter (see Facebook group here), in Montrèal on March 8.

I have been reflecting lately on my journey that started twenty years ago. Twenty years ago I was covert and I did absolutely everything in my power to hide my stuttering. It took my time in university for me to really practice being comfortable in my own skin and practice being open about my stuttering. Here is a poem that reflects some of that journey.

Podcast pain and gutsy gains

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a very visual person. While there isn’t anything wrong with that, it has provided me with one major setback. Due to my stuttering, if I'm speaking with someone, I need their visual attention. So, if someone I’m speaking to is looking at a computer screen, looking through cupboards or sitting in the front seat of a car while I’m sitting in the backseat, getting even just a few words out can be a daunting task. Since I can’t see who I’m speaking to on the phone, it makes speaking even more difficult.
